This document is a very brief summary of the BIBTEX format for bibliographic references. It does not purport to cover the whole format, for which the reader is referred to a suitable text on the subject. The BIBTEX format consists of references each of which is is enveloped by @@type{key, ...}@

- author or editor, title, publisher, year
- address, crossref, edition, chapter or pages, key, month, note, number or volume, series, type
- inproceedings
- author, title, booktitle, year

- phdthesis
- author, school, title, year

where the fields mean:
- address
- Address of publisher (usually just city or town)
- annote
- Annotation (e.g. abstract); usually ignored
- author
- Author's name
- booktitle
- Book containing article referenced
- crossref
- Key of another reference in the same database whose details are inherited
- editor
- Editor(s) of book or conference proceedings
- institution
- Institution under whose auspices a technical report has been published
- journal
- Journal in which an article has been published
- key
- For alphabetizing purposes when author information missing
- month
- Month of publication
- note
- Additional information
- number
- Number of the document
- organization
- Sponsoring organization for a conference
- pages
- Page number(s)
- publisher
- Publisher for a book or conference proceedings (not for a journal)
- school
- Name of academic institution for which thesis was written
